The Denver Broncos, in a strategic move for their financial future, have decided to bench quarterback Russell Wilson for the remainder of the 2023 season. This decision, reported by NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, is primarily motivated by financial considerations. Wilson, who is due $39 million fully guaranteed in 2024, has a $37 million injury guarantee for 2025 that becomes fully guaranteed in March. By sitting him for the final two games, the Broncos aim to avoid the risk of a catastrophic injury that could impact their financial flexibility, especially if they choose to move on from the 35-year-old quarterback in 2024.
Jarrett Stidham will replace Wilson as the starting quarterback for the upcoming game against the Chargers, marking his first start for the Broncos. This move is reminiscent of the Las Vegas Raiders’ tactic last season with Derek Carr, benching the starter in favor of then-backup Stidham. Despite Wilson’s improved performance under coach Payton compared to a difficult first season in Denver in 2022, the team’s recent struggles, including losing three of their last four games, have hampered their playoff chances. Coach Payton emphasized that while economics play a role, the primary goal is to invigorate the team’s offense.
The Broncos, currently standing with a 7-8 record, have an 8% chance to make the postseason, as per Next Gen Stats. Stidham’s performance in the final games will be crucial for the Broncos’ slim playoff hopes and will also serve as an evaluation period for Payton as he plans for the 2024 season.
