The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department recently released new body camera footage, providing a chilling audio record of the shootout that brought an end to a deadly attack at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) last month. The incident, which led to the tragic loss of three professors and critically wounded a fourth, occurred on December 6 during a bustling lunch hour at the university’s business school.
The footage captures the tense moments leading up to the confrontation with the 67-year-old gunman. Although the actual shootout near the main entrance of the five-story business school building is not visually shown, the audio in the video is the first released recording of the police gunfire that ultimately neutralized the shooter.
The video illustrates a police officer navigating through the first floor of the business school amidst a blaring security alarm. As the officer ascends to the second-floor walkway, distant gunfire is heard, its volume competing with the alarm. The officer, audibly distressed, quickly descends back down the stairs, heading towards the direction of the main entrance where the gunfire was originating.
Outside, the scene is chaotic, with marked patrol cars and additional police officers present. The officer is heard inquiring if the suspect has been located, followed by a radio announcement confirming a person down at the front of the business school.
The Las Vegas police department, still investigating the incident, has not disclosed the number of rounds fired during the confrontation with the shooter. Further, both the department and a spokesperson for UNLV have declined to comment on the specifics of the ongoing investigation.
This new footage is part of three hours of material released, making it the second batch of videos shared by the police department in relation to this case. More footage is expected to be released in the future.
Last month’s release of approximately five hours of video offered the first glimpse of the shooter inside the business school. In a shocking revelation, one of the videos showed the responding officers mistakenly directing the shooter out of the building, mistaking him for a bystander amidst the frantic search for victims and threats.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear, but it has been reported that the gunman was experiencing financial difficulties and had been unsuccessful in securing teaching positions at UNLV and other schools in Nevada.
