Florida has gained a concerning distinction according to a recent report from the state’s transportation officials. The Sunshine State now leads the nation in bicycle-related fatalities and injuries, with an alarming average of 18 bicycle crashes occurring daily.
This worrying statistic is backed by data from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, which underscores Florida’s position at the top of the list for bike deaths per capita in the United States.
Martin Stern, an attorney with Anidjar and Levine, points out that Florida’s status as a major tourist destination significantly contributes to these statistics. The influx of visitors unfamiliar with Florida’s roads leads to increased safety risks for bicyclists.
Stern, whose law firm specializes in personal injury cases, including those involving bicycle accidents, emphasizes the lasting impact these injuries can have on individuals. “Injuries can last a lifetime,” he remarked, expressing his wish that such accidents could be avoided.
The report also highlighted a tragic incident from last year involving Dartmouth football coach Buddy Teevens. Teevens succumbed to his injuries five months after being hit by a pickup truck while cycling in St. Augustine.
To combat these risks, Brian Corcoran of Champion Bike Shop offers essential safety tips to his customers. Corcoran advises cyclists to ride with the traffic in designated bike lanes or on sidewalks, where legal, such as in Jacksonville, while always yielding to pedestrians. He also stresses the importance of wearing brightly colored clothing when riding at night and the necessity of wearing a helmet.
“Be safe and be healthy. That’s what bicycling is all about,” Corcoran said, encapsulating the ethos of responsible cycling.
In the unfortunate event of a crash, attorney Stern recommends victims to be vigilant of their injuries, keep a phone handy for emergency calls, and if possible and safe, stay at the scene to take pictures as evidence.
The report serves as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by cyclists in Florida, urging both cyclists and motorists to be more aware and take necessary precautions for safety.
